Description: BMPRII is a cell surface receptor that is part
of the TGFh family of signal transduction molecules. Type II
receptors phosphorylate and activate type I receptors which
autophosphorylate, then bind and activate SMAD transcriptional
regulators. Similar to TGFh receptors, type I and II BMP receptors
contain serine threonine kinase activity, form heteromeric
complexes upon ligand stimulation, and use Smads as secondary
messengers. Bone Morphogenic Proteins (BMP) are members of the TGF
beta superfamily that affect bone and cartilage formation. BMPs
may be an important factor for development of the viscera, with
roles in cell proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation, and
